I think maybe it's because the japanese market could have trouble with pronouncing 'revolution'. Wii gives off a sort of ipod-like vibe, and also goes well with the new design ideas you see on the DS-lite and the gameboy mini.
Also you have to keep in mind they're catering mostly the market of players that have a lot less gaming background than say the ps3 or xbox360 does. So it's going to have to be a brandname that everyone knows about on it's own, like ipod, or walkman, and to some extent also, gameboy. Many people who are not into gaming that much will basically name any handheld console a gameboy. I think that's the idea behind Wii.
